Malnutrition
Did you Know?
Malnutrition contributes to 53 percent of the 9.7 million deaths of children under five years old each year in developing countries.
At KAH DC Metro, our goal is to make food and nourishment more available to these children and their families. We organize regular packaging events where volunteers from the Washington DC area can gather to package meals which will be shipped to those in need.
We look to gather further support from members of our local community who can help by volunteering their time and giving contributions to help our organization grow and reach even more families worldwide.
Not having enough food or the correct type of food is a problem faced by 1 out of every 6 people on our planet. Persistent hunger leads to malnutrition. Malnutrition, which results from not getting proper amounts of vitamins and minerals to meet daily nutritional requirements, can impair an individual’s ability to grow, learn, have children, do physical work and resist and recover from disease. The statistics speak for themselves:
-
907 million people in developing countries alone are hungry
-
More than 60 percent of chronically hungry people are women
-
Under-nutrition contributes to 53 percent of the 9.7 million deaths of children under five each year in developing countries.
-
Iron deficiency is the most prevalent form of malnutrition worldwide, affecting an estimated 2 billion people. Eradicating iron deficiency can improve national productivity levels by as much as 20 percent.
