About Us
Our Mission
Our mission is to work towards combating hunger by feeding families, especially children, suffering from chronic malnourishment around the world and within the United States.
What We Do
Towards this objective, our satellite organizes packaging events in which volunteers gather to prepare meal packets from four basic ingredients namely rice, soy, vita min powder and dehydrated vegetables. These packets are sealed, boxed and prepared for shipment to the country and organization in need. Events are typically held quarterly. See our Past Events
Our inaugural event was held on October 18, 2009. Since then we have gained generous contributions and support from our volunteers. So far, in less than a year, we have packed approximately 62,000 meals, 28,000 of which were sent to Haiti after its devastating earthquake, and others distributed to feed children in orphanages throughout Nicaragua, as well as a portion sent to local DC shelters.
Goals
Hunger and under-nourishment are some of the greatest challenges facing many developing countries. Sadly, children are disproportionately affected due to their inability to obtain food, clean water and other essentials. With these nutrient-packed meals, our goal is to significantly reduce the number of malnourished children locally and around the world. In 2009, over 48 million meals were packed by all Kids Against Hunger packaging centers in the USA and sent around the world. Our satellite would like to contribute in helping to surpass that number.
In addition, we would like to expand our volunteer base and become one of the leading community service organizations in the DC Metro area. Our goal is to involve area schools and colleges, as well as community centers and places of religious worship, and encourage individuals of all ages to donate their time. Your support both financially and through your participation at our packaging events is critical for KAH DC Metro to prosper. We need volunteers to help with packaging, transport, as well as to offer donations to purchase supplies and ship these meals to places in need.
We thank you and encourage you to be a part of this important cause!
